Frugal Summer Fun Series: Cook as a Family

If you have kids that are at least 18 months old, you have a family that can help cook 🙂

Why not make some special family memories surrounding food? Pick a meal and then pick a recipe and assign everyone a job. There are tons of blogs and magazine articles and Pinterest posts dedicated to “kid friendly” recipes so if you don’t have one in mind, take a look around and pick something everyone would enjoy. Here are some ideas:

Breakfast:

  • Muffins – kids can pick the kind but blueberry and chocolate chip are some obvious favorites.
  • Anything that has mashed bananas in it
  • Teach interested kids about measurements and let them pour in ingredients
  • Let them help make coffee or tea
  • Make a juice bar
  • Smoothies or homemade yogurt parfaits

Lunch:

  • Let everyone make their own sandwiches
  • Snack plates: pick various items from the fridge and pantry and make a nice platter of fun food options
  • Make a salad together or your own salad bar
  • Fruit Salad
  • Zucchini fritters or any easy recipe that kids can mix together

Dinner:

  • Make your own pizza night
  • Make your own taco night
  • Pasta bar (various types of pasta and toppings and sauces)
  • BBQ night where kids get to help with marinades and rubs
  • Breakfast for Dinner
